What’s a yahoo? And why is it on a hat?

It all started during Tropical Storm Debby when Mayor Cogswell used the term to discourage those driving through floodwaters. In short, a yahoo is a thrill-seeker who disregards safety measures during a storm. The term began to catch on, gaining attention from The New York Times, NPR, The Weather Channel, and The Post and Courier.

This viral moment highlights a serious message about flood safety. To keep “yahoos” off the roads, city council recently passed a no-wake zone ordinance, limiting speeds to 5 mph in floodwaters.
